Gujarat Food Wishes All The Food Lovers A Very Happy & Wonderful Makar Sankranti!

Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival; an auspicious day as per Hindu calendar is celebrated in 2nd week of January i.e. on 14th January every year. It has its own spiritual significance. This festival is perhaps the only festival whose date falls on the very same day, each year. One of the most loved, festival all around the world which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fun!

Makar Sankranti or Sankranti marks the beginning of spring season and harvest season in India. It is believed that on this day Sun God leaves celestial sign Sagittarius (Dhanu) and enters celestial sign Capricorn (Makar), hence the term Makar Sankranti. Sun God stands for spiritual light; goodness and wisdom, which indicate, one should move away from darkness to light, grow spiritually and rise higher and higher.

Different states in India celebrate this festival differently. In Maharashtra & Gujarat it is celebrated as Sankranti or Makar Sankranti where as in South India, it is celebrated as Pongal where as Punjabis celebrate it as Lohri. Different states, different festivals, but the reason behind each celebration is the same, enjoy and welcome the auspicious phase into your life.  Or one can also say it’s a way to thank the Almighty for all that one has got in their life and also to seek blessings for health, wealth and prosperity in his life.

Like every festival, special food items are prepared during Sankranti too. Tilgul ladoo, made from sesame (til) and jaggery (gul) and also Undhiyu (mixed vegetables like green garlic, broad beans, baby brinjal, small potato etc). People enjoy this lip smacking yummy feast. One can find Undhiyu and tilgul ladoo in almost every Gujarati house. Also, Indian sweet bread is prepared with jaggery and sesame stuffed in it.

On this day people exchange tilgul ladoos and seek the blessings of elders.  Tigul ladoo basically contains sesame seeds, jiggery and sometimes peanut or crushed peanuts are also added while making these ladoos. It is believed that the ingredients contain in this ladoo helps to keeps one’s body warm and healthy.

On this day, the blue sky turns multicolored with varieties of kites.  One can see kites of different colors, shapes and sizes, hot air balloons flying during Sankranti festival. Kite flying festivals are also held in various places in Gujarat.  People enjoy participating and watching it too. Kite flying also has a significance, which teaches us; no matter how high one may rise, but always remain firm to your roots!!
